Polymeric Sand: Why It’s Essential for Long-Lasting Paver Installations

When homeowners install a paver patio, walkway, or driveway, most of the focus is on choosing the style and color of the pavers. While those decisions are important, one of the most critical parts of a durable paver installation is something many people overlook: polymeric sand.

At Cole’s Landscaping and Property Maintenance LLC, we always recommend and install polymeric sand for paver joints because it helps protect the integrity of the entire installation. If installed properly, polymeric sand can significantly extend the life of your paver project while reducing maintenance.

We proudly serve homeowners throughout Daytona Beach, South Daytona, Port Orange, Ponce Inlet, New Smyrna Beach, Ormond Beach, and surrounding areas throughout Volusia County.

What Is Polymeric Sand?

Polymeric sand is a specialized joint sand used between pavers. It looks similar to regular sand but contains binding polymers that activate when water is applied.

Once activated, the sand hardens slightly and locks the pavers together while still allowing small amounts of flexibility.

This creates a durable joint that helps keep your paver surface stable and protected.

Why Polymeric Sand Is Better Than Regular Sand

Many low-cost paver installations use basic sand because it’s cheaper and faster to install. Unfortunately, regular sand often leads to problems over time.

Polymeric sand provides several advantages:

Prevents Weed Growth

Regular sand allows weeds to easily take root between pavers. Polymeric sand hardens and creates a barrier that greatly reduces weed growth.

Helps Stop Ant Infestations

Ants commonly tunnel through regular sand joints, which can cause pavers to shift or sink. Polymeric sand helps block insects from nesting in the joints.

Reduces Sand Washout

Florida experiences frequent heavy rainstorms. Standard sand can wash out quickly, leaving gaps between pavers. Polymeric sand resists erosion and stays in place much longer.

Locks Pavers Together

When polymeric sand hardens, it stabilizes the pavers and helps distribute weight evenly across the surface.

This improves durability and reduces movement.

The Importance of Proper Installation

Even the best polymeric sand can fail if it is installed incorrectly.

At Cole’s Landscaping and Property Maintenance LLC, we follow proper installation steps to ensure long-term performance:

  1. Pavers are installed and compacted properly.

  2. Polymeric sand is swept deeply into all joints.

  3. We run a plate compactor to insure the sand gets down into the paver joints.

  4. We add more sand were necessary and sweep the sand again.

  5. The surface is cleaned thoroughly before activation.

  6. Water is carefully applied to activate the polymers.

  7. The sand is allowed to cure properly.

If too much water is used—or not enough—the sand may fail to bond correctly.

Its important to stay off the pavers for 24 hours for people and 48 hours for vehicles.

Signs Your Pavers May Need New Joint Sand

If your existing paver patio or walkway has regular sand joints, you may start noticing problems such as:

  • Weeds growing between pavers

  • Ant mounds appearing in joints

  • Sand washing away after rain

  • Loose or shifting pavers

Replacing the joint material with polymeric sand can restore stability and improve the appearance of your paver surface.
